Trying so hard to write down these feelings as they come screaming out-
trying to hold off the pain in my hand long enough to stop skipping letters
Write down these thoughts- keep time to the sound of feet tapping,
Bricks falling.
The world is disintegrating around us and all we can do is stare.
Everyone’s got a life to live,
Some foreign charity to give to and will we ever make a difference?
Can we really buy salvation for “Only 27 cents a day!”?
Turn a blind eye
I’m doing something good for humanity
An un-known, un-appreciated urban superman.
Superhero.
Superman is dead.
Traditional lifestyles
+ 9-5 existence
Take a moment to look out the window of your company car and see the world.
It’s flying past around you and all you can think to do is change the radio station.
Public radio. Current events.
CIA cover-ups.
Try to be a part of something
A good American knows the news.
Complain Complain Complain
Pay someone to listen
Psychiatry
An all-time high
A Prozac nation
And children with ADHD
And all sorts of asthma.
Buy a bigger car
A nicer house
An in-ground swimming pool
Pure-bred dog
Name-brand cat food
Hyphenated last name
And kids with bigger, more extravagant disorders.
What does life have to do with personal experience?
Pick up the parenting books
Pick up the pregnancy books
Popular Mechanics of
Being an American.
We’re all the pinnacle of
Style, perfection
Perfect people
Making money
Spending even more.
Only the best for us
Only the best for the U.S.
A country spoiled
And ROTTEN with
Materialism- driven like a stake into our consciousness.
Plain to see, but too deep to dig out.
Devouring
Depleting
Devoured
Depleted
Accounts, stores, -morales-
Send your children off to war
Out of sight out of mind
Ignore the warning signs.
Vote Republican
And this is what we’re fighting for.
Trying so hard to protect.
And this is what they’re dying for.
On a more analytical note, this poem is incredibly interesting. Like, I read it a few times and kept picking things up, finding my mind making it more complex... it's certainly food for thought. Well done!
